Our digital pictures begin in March 2003, a year and a half after leaving Seattle, and a year after arriving in Baja.

I bought our digital camera in San Diego on a trip north to renew our Mexican tourist cards. These are only good for 180 days, requiring that you leave the country and renew them every six months, but due to a stroke of luck we'd been able to stay in Mexico a year before going back to the U.S. I'd made the trip from La Paz (at the far south end of the Baja peninsula) with "Seawitch Jim" Parmenter, one of my closest Baja sailing friends; he drove and I paid for gas. The trip is around 600 miles, each way taking 24 hours of driving split over two days. We arrived in San Diego around the time the U.S. was invading Iraq.

On the trip southbound, with my new camera in hand, I was able to take pictures as Jim drove, occasionally asking him to stop when the scenery got particularly wonderful. The first picture is a short distance south of the Mexican border, the last in the cactus plain just north of La Paz.
